ABOUT TOUMAI
Toumai is a social justice leader and human rights professional who thrives on fostering unlikely partnerships. With a diverse background that includes finance, international development, and humanitarian aid, her journey has been marked by the relentless pursuit of positive change.
Toumai holds a Master of International Relations from Columbia University, concentrating on Human Rights and Humanitarian Policy, and a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance and Economics from the John Molson School of Business at Concordia University in Canada. She’s fluent in English, French, Hebrew, and Spanish.
Toumai’s career began in banking and treasury, which served as a segue into finance and project management in the international development and humanitarian aid sector.
Toumai’s INGO work has taken her to Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala, France, South Sudan, Haiti, and most recently, Timor-Leste, where she spent time as CARE Timor-Leste’s Interim Program Director. She has been head of mission in several emergency humanitarian responses, designed and managed large international development programs, and held leadership positions at INGOs focused on fostering cross-sector partnerships.
Toumai’s interest in the nexus of development and corporate affairs became prominent as a logistics coordinator for a boutique management consulting firm securing foreign investment from multinationals in Haiti. This focus continued to grow as she played a pivotal role in establishing the private sector fundraising arm of a medium-sized INGO, facilitating connections between Fortune 500 companies and humanitarian missions and needs. Toumai’s knowledge in this field was further honed through fellowships and research, looking into extractive companies' consultations with Indigenous Peoples, financing climate adaptation and mitigation practices, and the complex realm of business and human rights.
In her current role as Associate Director of Development at CARE, Toumai collaborates with the private sector to create and implement fundraising strategies, embedded in an understanding of companies’ supply chains and the human rights risks they face, as well as the humanitarian and development priorities of the INGO. She also works closely with internal and external stakeholders on business imperatives, CSR interests, brand synergies, employee engagement opportunities, policy influence, and sector leadership opportunities.
Toumai is deeply motivated by addressing societal wrongs, enhancing people's lives, and improving processes. Her profound belief in the power of human connections and the transformative potential of cross-sector partnerships has consistently propelled her work forward.
Toumai is expertly poised to share insights from over a decade of working in humanitarian assistance, the private sector, and their intersection. Key areas of interest include how companies can have a positive impact on the world’s most pressing issues, and the application of international human rights standards to corporations.
